We are Clint Portis and David Whitman. Our reason for creating this forum, and the podcast, was to offer a place for people to share ideas about living their life more freely. We realized that many of you, ourselves included, live in an urban or suburban environment and are extremely limited in how we can live our lives. While we live in the midst of absolute freedom of choice in terms of products and entertainment, coupled with extreme convenience, there is only so much we felt that we could do to control what we ate, drank, how we traveled, earned income, and powered our homes. We both had the luxury of growing up in the country, where we were able to farm, raise animals, and hunt. We both knew that moving to a rural farm was neither practical, nor 100% desirable and wanted to explore an idea called Urban Homesteading.
Urban Homesteading is an idea based on self-reliance, social responsibility, and freedom of choice. Our overriding theme is Sustainability, Survival, and Self-Sufficiency. By growing a garden, capturing rain water, raising a few chickens in the back yard, building a solar oven, learning how to harvest berries and fruit in the public domain, canning and storing food, putting up some solar panels, and working with others in your local area or neighborhood, you can obtain a lifestyle that is more free and less reliant on others which you have little control over. Whether you are distrustful of agricultural corporations, or the government, there is much to be gained by returning to the earth, and doing some of these things yourself. Not all the answers can be obtained by living like a man on an island, nor can they be answered by only working within the community. It is a life tailored to your hopes and goals, within the framework of an urban environment. We are not the first with this idea, but are very committed to it, and committed to working with others to explore options and possibilities.
Above all else, "Live Simply" (Henry David Thoreau).
